Season
Our season begins the week of Labor Day and continues to the end of March.
Half-season Midget teams finish before Thanksgiving so that those players are free for high school hockey season.
Games
Games are typically held on weekends, although there may be occasional weeknight games.
Most games are played in the Greater Boston Area within a 30-45 minute drive of Newton.
Practices
Teams are typically on the ice 1-2 weeknights per week. If we have ice available, we also try to schedule practices on weekend days that do not have a scheduled game.
Practices are held at Fessenden School, Daly Rink, Reilly Memorial Rink (Cleveland Circle), and John A. Ryan Skating Arena (Watertown).
Frequently Asked Questions
My child is new to hockey - where do we start?
If your child has no hockey experience and is between the ages of 5 and 10, they would likely benefit from a season in our Learn to Play program.
If your child has completed a Learn to Play program somewhere, they are likely ready to participate in our Travel program.
If your child falls outside of these criteria, or if you are unsure about whether Travel hockey is the right fit, please reach out to us and we can help guide you through the options.
We missed tryouts - can my child still play?
Yes! As a town hockey program, our goal is to provide an opportunity for everyone who wants to play. If you register after tryouts have ended, your child will automatically be rostered on the lowest team in their age group and will be evaluated for possible movement in the fall.
Can I get on the ice with my child?
As an entirely volunteer-run organization, we are often in need of capable on-ice volunteers. Please indicate your interest in coaching during the registration process or email our coaching director at vptravel@newtonyouthhockey.com and we can tell you more about coaching opportunities and requirements.
We don't live in Newton - can my child play for NYH?
With a few exceptions, Massachusetts Hockey rules state that you should play for your town of residence. If you live in another town with a youth hockey program, we strongly encourage you to play for them. If your town does not have a youth hockey program, you are more than welcome to join us.
If you have any questions at all about eligibility, please reach out to us directly at president@newtonyouthhockey.com.
What if we have scheduling conflicts?
We recognize that the season is long and that you will be at the rink a lot. However, especially at the younger ages, we encourage you to make sure that hockey fits into your life in a positive way. If your child wants to play a fall sport, you want to go skiing in the winter, or you have other family obligations, please don't feel guilty about missing some hockey.
That being said, this is a team sport, and coaches will expect a reasonable level of commitment. Please inform coaches well in advance of any planned absences so that they can call up other players if needed. Also note that players need to participate in at least 60% of games to be eligible for playoffs.
