Finding coaches for any sport is always an endeavor. Finding coaches for hockey is an experience all to itself. As you know, NYH is a volunteer organization so all our coaches are dedicating their free time to improve the organization. The hockey season is like no other we begin the season at the beginning of September and complete our season in early April. This is an 8-month long season for our players, and it is also an 8-month long commitment from our coaches. Roughly 90 % of our coaches have a child in the program which allows NYH to tap the parent resource to help coach our teams.

How does NYH find a coach?

NYH asks any prospective coach to fill out an application for review.  This application is for any Head or Assistant coaching opportunity. We ask questions about hockey and overall coaching history. Although not a requirement, NYH likes to know what experience a potential coach may have so that we can properly place the candidate in the right situation to succeed.

How does NYH determine the selection process?

The application is reviewed and potential candidates are considered for various positions. NYH looks to see if any potential candidate has coached with NYH before and is willing to coach for another year. NYH also looks for any new applicants and discusses with them the various opportunities available to them. NYH always tries to fit the best person with the best situation.

Are there any unique situations in the process?

As stated earlier with NYH being a volunteer organization, we do all we can to make sure that every team is provided a head coach and review every situation to make that possible. There are times during the selection process that we have a willing parent who wants to coach their son or daughters team.  As earlier described 90% of coaches are parents so this accommodation is rather common.

Does coaching selection effect player selection?

It does not. Player evaluation and tryout scores are completed prior to any coach being selected. Teams are formed based on a players overall score and rosters are set prior coaches being awarded a team.

What happens if a coach’s child is called up in September to another team?

This happens but not often. Once a coach is selected, they are asked in August to form their coaching staff and team manager. In the event a coach’s child is called to another team and the coach would like to leave their current position, NYH recruits one of the assistant coaches to take over the duties of Head Coach.Finding coaches for any sport is always an endeavor.
