NYH Midgets 2019 Season Roster Changes - North and South Teams

Greetings,

NYH is excited to announce a change to the structure of the Midget teams for the upcoming season. NYH is going to roster the teams by their high school--North or South--attendance.

The purpose of the NYH Midgets program is to:
(1) Provide all eligible Newton youth an opportunity to play hockey
(2) Prepare players for their high school season

The Midgets age group is the last stop for town hockey. Over 90% of Midget players are enrolled in Newton Public Schools and will attend either North or South High School. The goal is to increase connection and commitment to NYH by creating a direct line from NYH to the high school programs and give players a head start on their high school season by working together with those teammates.

All players will try out. Placement will be based on tryouts, past NYH coaches evaluations, and input from the high school head coaches.

Players not attending Newton Public Schools will be ranked and rostered based on previous NYH coaches input and tryouts as with all other age groups.

Highly ranked players outside NYH Public may be placed on either the North or South team.

If there are enough players for a third team, it will likely be comprised of a combination of players from North, South, and other schools.

The tryout schedule will be announced shortly. Thank you.

Todd Foster | President
Newton Youth Hockey

NYH 2019-2020 Tryouts Volunteers

Dear NYH Parents -

It is that time of year again!  Tryouts will be here before you know it.  Starting on Feb 28th, in order to have a successful tryout season like years past, NYH is in need of volunteers to help us with the sign-in desk as well as to provide on ice help to run drills for the players.  Please take a minute, and see if there is a time slot you can help us out in.  We appreciate you signing up, and look forward to seeing you at the rink during this exciting time of year.

Please sign up to help today by using this link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080f49a4ae2fa13-newton1.

Members Evaluation Information

NYH Travel Members,

In further effort to increase transparency with the player roster placements, we’re sharing the evaluation criteria that the coaches use to score the players. The intent is that one head coach and at least one assistant coach completes the form for each player.

Category Item

  1. Skating

  • Balance/Mobility
  • Speed/Quickness
  1. Hands

  • Puckhandling
  • Passing/Receiving
  1. Shooting

  • Accuracy/Velocity
  • Variety
  1. Hockey Sense

  • Anticipation/Instinct
  • Defensive Awareness
  • Offensive Awareness
  1. Competitiveness

  • Intensity
  • Work Ethic
  1. Character

  • Discipline
  • Consistency
  1. Coaches Comments

  • Comments

Each Item is scored 1 thru 10 with 10 being the best. A score of 10 shows mastery of all criteria. A score of 5 would indicate ability to execute all skills adequately. A score of 1 would indicate insufficient skill for the level.
Goalies have different Items and are scored the same way.

Category Item

  1. Stance

  • Movement
  • Skating
  • Form & Agility
  • Covering Angles
  1. Quickness

  • Rebounds & Covering
  • Aggressiveness
  • Recovery
  1. Concentration

  • Commitment
  1. Coaches Comments

  • Comments

You are welcome to share this information with your player as the coaches evaluation process will begin soon.
As a reminder, the intent is that the 2+ coaches ratings carry about 60% of the scoring weight, and the tryout evaluators’ (four or more evaluators over three tryout sessions) scores worth about 40%. Since the coaches are with the players 4-5 months prior to their evaluations, their score carries a bit more weight.

It would be nice if this was a simple math exercise, but it isn’t. Some kids are new to NYH and don’t have a coaches scoring history to count for 60%. Some kids miss tryouts for a variety of reasons. In these cases, we seek additional input where we can.
I hope this helps with your understanding of the process. Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Girls February Clinic - Dream Big w/ Lexi Bender

For those looking for Girls hockey activity during the February break.

-----

My name is Lexi Bender, and I am a member of the NWHL’s Boston Pride, as well as a Boston College alumnus.

Freddy Meyer, Owner of Dream Big HockeyStars and former NHL'er, and I are putting together an all-girls skills clinic during the February break (Feb. 19-22), at Flynn Rink in Medford. We held the clinic last year, and the girls brought so much energy that we are adding another day of instruction to the 2019 edition.

The clinic presents an opportunity for a quick mid-season tune-up and will feature skill work, speed, and competitive small area games. Guest coaches with Collegiate, Professional, and Olympic experience will ensure a fun and productive environment, while daily prizes for top campers are sure to spark competition!

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Registration is available at: http://www.dreambighockeystars.com/girlsclinic

Thank you!

Lexi Bender
