Driscoll Skating & Skills 2018-2019 Season

Hi all,

After a successful offering last season, Tim Driscoll has opened up his skills sessions to NYH again this year. Below is his note.

Todd Foster | President

Newton Youth Hockey

I am very excited to offer the in-season skills program held at Roxbury Latin Rink to Newton Youth Hockey players again this year. I have kept the pricing and the hours the same. The program will be similar, although as there are four additional sessions this year, I have added more Stickhandling and Passing to the curriculum. I wanted to give you the opportunity to share with all of the players in your program before I reached out to everyone that participated last year.

Best,
Tim

Driscoll Skating & Skills will be offering a Skills program at the Roxbury Latin Rink in West Roxbury. The program will run sixteen consecutive Sundays beginning Sunday, November 18 and ending Sunday, March 3. The focus of the program will be to deliver a progressive curriculum of Power Skating and Edge Work (Inside Edges; Outside Edges; Single Leg Edge Work; Long Stride; Crossovers; Open Hip; Tight Turns; Punch Step; Backwards Skating; and Defensive Skating Tactics) combined with a similarly progressive curriculum of Stickhandling and Passing with Movement. The program is designed to advance the Skill Development of all players and lead to greater confidence and more success in games.

We have designed a progressive curriculum of skating drills that breaks down each Power Skating movement into its smaller individual components. The drills are accompanied by teaching and instruction that is also progressive, i.e., we tackle the basics of each drill first and then move towards mastery of each drill. Further, once we have taught the Power Skating and Edge Work curriculum, we introduce Stickhandling and Passing (begin with Stationary and advance to game speed) and teach the importance of combining the multiple and advanced motor skills that are required to play the game of hockey.

We have found that players of all ages and skill levels benefit greatly from our approach.

Wegmans, Dick's Sporting Goods Added to List of Sponsors

During the off-season, the Board has been reaching out to organizations to support NYH as sponsors. Within the past few weeks, we have added Wegmans, Dick's Sporting Goods (stores in Natick and Dedham), and Staples.

What does Newton Youth Hockey do with sponsorships? Support for non-profit organizations, such as NYH, come in all different colors, shapes, and sizes! As the price for ice time rises, we are hoping for those costs to impact our players less and less.

  • Staples generously discounted the signs you see around town, in addition to 10 free signs.
  • Dick's Sporting Goods has provided packets of coupons designed especially for our hockey participants to make sure you have the right equipment to keep you safe. They have also dedicated one weekend (Saturday & Sunday) in November for NYH participants to receive discounts on purchases. Dick's is also donating equipment and sponsoring our organization for multiple youth programs.
  • Wegmans (Chesnut Hill) is generously making a cash donation this month as well for our programs and clinics.

We are always looking for sponsors. We believe there is no such thing as a small donation!

2018-2019 Boys Middle School Hockey Registration Is Open

To Our Community,

Registration is now open for the Newton Middle School teams. As in years past these will be “game” only teams.  NYH would like to field three teams (6th,7th and 8th grade) in the Valley Middle School Hockey League, but this will be dependent on registration enrollment.  Your help with registering ASAP will help us determine the number of teams to submit to the Valley League.  All Newton teams will participate in a placement jamboree at the end of November and the first games of the regular season will likely be played during the first weekend of December.

Register on or before October 5th, 2018 and save $25 off the registration fee.  Please sign up online here.  Tryouts (if necessary) will be held in early November (date TBA).  Please see the Middle School policies for more details on tryouts and team placement.

The Valley League offers

* Network of 30+ rinks (MA & NH) *

* Geographic Scheduling *

* Integrated Scheduling with Primary VHL Team *

* Parity Adjustments *

* 12 to 15 Games Including Playoffs *

Most of the games will be held on Sunday nights, but there will be some games on Fridays and Saturdays as well.  Middle School Games are competitive, fun, exciting and another great opportunity to play the game we love.

Any questions feel free to reach out to me.

Introducing the NYH Sprites!

What is a Sprite? Sprites are traditionally associated with gaming, primarily video games. The very small computer graphics are integrated into a larger scale - as part of a bigger picture.

You spoke, we listened! Additionally, we REDUCED the cost of the program significantly from $625 to $550! This program encompasses NYH's Learn to Play program with an In-House atmosphere as the Sprites season progresses. We will begin the program with a concentration on skills development on both Saturdays and Sundays. In January, we will start to break off into teams on Saturdays. Each team will practice a drill for the first 15-20 minutes of their session. This format allows players to warm-up while still developing their hockey skills. For the remainder of the practice, the teams will play Newton versus Watertown! The games will be played in a cross-ice setting and are designed to utilize the skills learned on Sundays. There will be no scores or records kept. The focus is to provide a setting to learn a game environment and, more importantly, to develop teamwork and camaraderie.

We have also extended our innaugural NYH Sprites season, which will now run from Nov 3 - Mar 10. Welcome to Newton Youth Hockey, Sprites!

-Lisa, VP Intramurals

SAVE THE DATES FOR NYH PUCK-DROP DINNER & LAUNCH TRAMPOLINE FUN

Dear Newton Youth Hockey Families:

The Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup last week, bringing a thrilling 2017-2018 hockey season to a close.  But don’t worry, the 2018-2019 hockey season is only few months away!

To celebrate the start of the 2018-2019 hockey season, NYH will host our annual Puck-Drop Dinner on Friday, September 14 at 6PM at the American Legion Post 440 in Nonantum.   We are planning a similar format to years past: BBQ, band, and lots of fun!  We also plan to hold a silent auction with gifts and game tickets.  All Newton Youth Hockey/Learn to Play/Learn to Skate families are welcome.  Please consider making a donation to the silent auction.  All proceeds go directly to support Newton Youth Hockey programs.

NEW this year, we are planning a Launch Trampoline FUNdraiser for the younger NYH members on Wednesday, October 10th.  What better way to build up those skating muscles than bounce, bounce, bounce!

Please put these events on your calendar now, so you don’t miss a great time.  We will announce more details for the Puck-Drop Dinner and the Launch FUNdraiser closer to the start of the season.

Have a great summer!

NYH Board

P.S. If you would like to help with this event, or if you have donations for the silent auction, please contact Brian Bean ( ).
