NYH 2019/20 Tryouts

To Our NYH Community,

Thank you for your support and patience during this tryout season.  The Tryouts were a big success, and now that tryouts are over the board is hard at work behind the scenes working to continue the coach and team selection process.  We understand anticipation is high, and that this is an exciting time as players and families alike are curious to see the end results.  For the NYH board to continue the process in a smooth fashion, all Mites thru Bantam rosters will be released no earlier than April 8th and hopefully no later than April 15th.  Midget teams begin their tryout sessions over the next couple of weeks, and rosters will be released later in the month of April.  The Girls U16/18 team has begun registration, and more information can found on the NYH home page.  Again, the board would like to take this time to thank you for your patience, continued commitment, volunteering and support of NYH as we all look forward to a rewarding and successful 2019/20 season.

Thanks,

Members Evaluation Information

NYH Travel Members,

In further effort to increase transparency with the player roster placements, we’re sharing the evaluation criteria that the coaches use to score the players. The intent is that one head coach and at least one assistant coach completes the form for each player.

Category Item

  1. Skating

  • Balance/Mobility
  • Speed/Quickness
  1. Hands

  • Puckhandling
  • Passing/Receiving
  1. Shooting

  • Accuracy/Velocity
  • Variety
  1. Hockey Sense

  • Anticipation/Instinct
  • Defensive Awareness
  • Offensive Awareness
  1. Competitiveness

  • Intensity
  • Work Ethic
  1. Character

  • Discipline
  • Consistency
  1. Coaches Comments

  • Comments

Each Item is scored 1 thru 10 with 10 being the best. A score of 10 shows mastery of all criteria. A score of 5 would indicate ability to execute all skills adequately. A score of 1 would indicate insufficient skill for the level.
Goalies have different Items and are scored the same way.

Category Item

  1. Stance

  • Movement
  • Skating
  • Form & Agility
  • Covering Angles
  1. Quickness

  • Rebounds & Covering
  • Aggressiveness
  • Recovery
  1. Concentration

  • Commitment
  1. Coaches Comments

  • Comments

You are welcome to share this information with your player as the coaches evaluation process will begin soon.
As a reminder, the intent is that the 2+ coaches ratings carry about 60% of the scoring weight, and the tryout evaluators’ (four or more evaluators over three tryout sessions) scores worth about 40%. Since the coaches are with the players 4-5 months prior to their evaluations, their score carries a bit more weight.

It would be nice if this was a simple math exercise, but it isn’t. Some kids are new to NYH and don’t have a coaches scoring history to count for 60%. Some kids miss tryouts for a variety of reasons. In these cases, we seek additional input where we can.
I hope this helps with your understanding of the process. Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks, and Happy New Year!
